Friday Preview
Must-see of the day: Twenty One Pilots
If you don't see any other bands the whole Lolla weekend, see Twenty One Pilots, Coming from Columbus, Ohio, Twenty One Pilots built a cult-like hometown following largely because of their crazy performances. They get the crowd into it more than any other band I've seen. Expect lead singer Tyler Joseph to climb speakers, jump off things, and twitch around like a madman. Also expect drummer Josh Dun to do his routine backflip off the piano during the show. If nothing else, it will be worth it to go crazy with the whole crowd for forty-five minutes.
The WHY? conflict of the day
Pacific Air vs. Band of Horses
12 pm - 1 pm
Who I'm seeing: Drowners (12-12:30)
Catch if you can: American Authors (12-12:40), The Neighbourhood (12:45)
I'd actually rather see American Authors than Drowners. The reason I'm seeing Drowners is because they're on the same stage as the next three bands I'm seeing. American Authors is a Indie-Rock band based in Brooklyn, NYC. They have two singles out- Believer and Best day of my life - that I really like. They also released a 5 song (plus two remixes) EP in 2011, titled Anthropology. They have an EP coming out August 27, 2013, which you can expect some songs from. The Neighbourhood is an alternative rock band from California. Their first full-length album, I Love You, was released April 23, 2013. Their biggest hit is entitled "Sweater Weather".
1 pm - 2 pm
Who I'm seeing: San Cisco (1-1:45)
Catch if you can: Keys N Krates (1-1:45)
San Cisco is an Australian Indie-Pop band who will be playing songs off their debut album San Cisco. I most like their songs "Awkward" and "Fred Astaire", which have misleading feel-good vibes when you look closer into their lyrics. Keys N Krates is a good show for the electro fan and will likely have a crazy crowd at Perry's stage.
2 pm - 3 pm
Who I'm seeing: Twenty One Pilots (2:15-3)
Catch if you can: Timeflies (2-3)
Twenty One Pilots will be an awesome atmosphere of great fans losing themselves to amazing music, and if I could recommend one show to see the whole weekend, it would be them.
3 pm - 4 pm
Who I'm seeing: Atlas Genius (3:30-4:15)
Catch if you can: Houndmouth (3:20-4)
When I saw Atlas Genius at Q87.7 PIQNIQ, I arrived halfway through their set to a quarter-full crowd in a huge amphitheater. Everyone was in between the side stage and the main stage. They played great, but the experience wasn't as good because the crowd was so empty and not into the show. At Lolla, this will definitely not be the story. They will have a big crowd, and if you're near the front, it will be an amazing show. Their album When It Was Now is one of my favorite new albums, and I think this will be one of the highlights of the day.
4 pm - 5 pm
Who I'm seeing: Pacific Air (4:30-5:10)
Catch if you can: Band Of Horses (4:15-5:15) or Theophilus London (4:45-5:30)
Pacific Air will be a nice break after Twenty One Pilots and Atlas Genius. They are on the BMI stage, which is a small stage in the shade. Most of their songs are very chill, so it may be a good show to grab a bite to eat and sit down to some great music.
5 pm - 6 pm
Who I'm seeing: Imagine Dragons (5:15-6:15)
Catch if you can: Hey Marseilles (5:20-6:20)
Imagine Dragons will be a crowded one, so i'd advise getting there early. Imagine Dragons' debut album Night Visions has enjoyed huge success. Imagine Dragons is one of my favorite bands, and I'm excited to see them live.
6 pm - 7 pm
Who I'd see: New Order (6:15-7:25)
Catch if you can: Queens of the Stone Age (6:15-7:30)
I'm not a huge fan of either bands, but they are both good bands, and would be good live. I'll probably take a break to eat during their sets.
7 pm - 8 pm
Who I'm seeing: Flux Pavilion (7-8:15) or Frightened Rabbit (7:15-8:15)
These are two very different shows, but I probably will go to Flux Pavilion, an electronic-dance artist, just to get the Perry's experience. Perry's stage has an incredible atmosphere, and the whole crowd will be going crazy during Flux Pavilion's performance. Frightened Rabbit is an indie-rock band from Scotland.
8 pm - 10 pm
Who I'm seeing: The Killers (8:25-10)
Catch if you can: Steve Aoki (8:45-10)
I'm super pumped for this show. The lights will be awesome, and the Killers play great music to dance to. The crowd will be huge, but if you get there early enough to get a good spot, I'll bet they will be one of Friday's highlights. If you want to get a feel for what their set will be like, look up their set at Lollapalooza Brasil 2013.
